The 4 Steps to Fixing Credit Report Mistakes

  1. Get your credit reports. Once per year you can get a free credit report (one from each of the three credit bureaus).
  2. Review them and make a list. Look over the reports for possible errors and mistakes, such as:
    1. Debts that have already been discharged through bankruptcy;
    2. Reported bankruptcy after 10 years;
    3. Reported judgments or charged-off debts after seven years;
    4. Renewed reporting of debts that had already been disputed and deleted; and
    5. Spelling or other mistakes with your name, past and current addresses, and employment history.

    Write down mistakes on three separate lists for the three different credit reports from the bureaus (each credit report may not have the same debts and/or mistakes).

  3. Write a letter to EACH bureau (see mailing addresses at bottom). Here's how your letter should look:
    1. List your name, current address and the last 4 digits of your social security number;
    2. Provide a clear statement that you're disputing information on your credit report;
    3. List each error and why it's not correct. Proof (like a copy of a bankruptcy discharge) should be mailed with the letter; and
    4. Send by certified mail with a return receipt, so you will have proof that you disputed the incorrect information on your credit report.
  4. Review the bureaus' responses. The credit bureaus will send you a response to your letter with the resolution, either agreeing to remove the inaccurate information or refusing to remove it. If it's not removed, contact Billbusters, Ledford, Wu & Borges, LLC to discuss your options and potential claims you may have under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
